Hello! Recently I joined a club at my school called “Best Buddies”. Best Buddies is a non-profit organization that strives to help create meaningful friendships for kids with different types of disabilities. Best Buddies provides services for almost 11,500 children in the State of Florida and has about 700,000 participants worldwide. One reason I joined this club is because I thought it provides valuable services for vulnerable population which is very important part of public health. The other reason is because I love talking to people so this would be a perfect opportunity for me to get to know more about children with intellectual and developmental disabilities and make new friends. I haven’t been in the club for very long but the events I attended and the time I spent with other members and kids were very fun and enjoyable. It made me think that we should be more inclusive in our communities and provide services that make people feel more valuable to everyone. Sometimes I see disabled people begging on the streets or unable to get the proper care they need due to lack of money which is upsetting. Some ways I think we could improve this is volunteering at food banks or homeless shelters, donating what you can, or just being kind and offering to be a friend and brighten someone’s day. I plan to take a more active part in my community as well, but it is a group effort. I hope the clubs I joined will grow with the help of me and others to make our community better. I want to find a way to make a long-lasting impact on my community and actually make a difference even if it would be just for a small group of students in my own school.
